How are diamonds cut if they are one big molecule of carbon atoms?

I have skim that diamonds are connected by 4 covalent bonds to every other carbon atom. How is it that they can be seperated by corporal means like cutting?

by stern a diamond you are just breaking some of the carbon-carbon bonds. if you rub a diamond between your fingers, you will rub off some of the outer C atoms. but they are so ashamed you wont be able to see them. the outside surface atoms are not connected by 4 covalent bonds,
